Alveo Basaltico

In the Alveo Basaltico wallpaper I find the bed of a vanished river, where rushing water ground the basalt columns until their hexagonal and pentagonal heads were levelled into a mosaic of polished stone. It is basalt eroded by the cataract, the style that gives this design its name: columnar rock cut clean by time and water, reduced to a mineral honeycomb with no break in continuity.

Anthracite grey and graphite dominate the surface, interrupted by paler slabs of slate, by ferrous and ochre stains where the water once stood in the old channels, and by bluish cores at the densest points of the rock. Close up, radial cracks, fine mineral veining and fossil growth rings tell the geological story cut into every hexagon.
