Arlecchino in Controcanto

The Arlecchino in Controcanto wallpaper is born of a single suspended gesture: a half-length musician, his face that of a harlequin, faces the viewer while the dark clarinet crosses his chest diagonally, like a note held longer than the silence before it.

The language is that of Cubism, declared without ambiguity: angular planes that interlock one into the other, the diamond costume broken into facets of light and shadow, the head taken apart into overlapping surfaces that show a profile and a frontal eye at once, as though the time of seeing had been doubled in a single instant. Ochre, burnt earth, muted terracotta and warm grey press against black and deep brown, while small accents of cream and washed blue draw the rhythm of the diamonds.

In this dismantled face I see a simple truth: music, like the gaze, can never be caught from a single point of view. Every fissure between the planes is a held note, every retouched edge speaks of the hesitation of someone seeking the exact form before fixing it. It is a portrait that is not content with the surface: it asks to be read close up, where the fine hatching and the incised lines of the clarinet keys reveal how much handwork lies behind the apparent geometric rigour.
