The story
And so the Aureola di Spine wallpaper comes about, a work that belongs to the great botanical family of leaves and fronds, read here through the close gaze of nature at its wildest. At the centre of the scene lives a Ferocactus areole: a felted cushion from which a radial fan of sturdy spines opens, cut with brick red at the base, loosening into a golden amber and finally fading to bone white at the tip. This crown of spines dominates the composition, set slightly off the central axis, while two or three smaller areoles withdraw gently towards the edges, letting the bottle-green flesh breathe, furrowed by deep ribs that draw parallel shadows like plant architecture.
Seen close up, the surface reveals the grey-white down of every cushion, the fine longitudinal striations of every spine, the waxy bloom and the small scars of the epidermis: a photographic reality, almost from a treatise of natural history, given back with absolute sharpness and natural light.
In this image I find the archaic logic of plant survival turned into ornament: the spine that protects becomes drawing, defence becomes beauty.
