Brocca Concreta

I sign the Brocca Concreta wallpaper as an act of subtraction: I take an everyday object and reduce it to its most honest structure. There is no ornament here, there is logic. The profile of a jug breaks down into pure planes — the handle a clean quarter circle, the spout a triangular wedge, the body a tall trapezoid, the base a squared rectangle — and each part fits into the next as in a visual equation.

I work in the language of MAC, the Movimento Arte Concreta, which rejects imitative form in favour of autonomous geometry: flat fields, no outlines, no shading, each plane an area of absolute colour meeting its neighbour along a clean joint, straight or curved. My palette comes from the matter of the object itself — terracotta, ochre, slate grey, bone white — four tones kept apart, never blended, like the tesserae of a rational mosaic.

Close up, the discipline opens into detail: the body divides into smaller rectangles and triangles of shifted colour, a fine white seam marks every junction, and a small misaligned square near the base breaks, just barely, the rigidity of the design — the one gesture of freedom in an otherwise absolute scheme.
