Campana di Lavagna

It comes about like this, between one gesture and the next, the Campana di Lavagna wallpaper: a wall of dark slate on which chalk has drawn, square after square, the oldest of playground games. It is the style called Chalk Playground in English, which I tell here as courtyard chalk, the kind that draws crooked lines and round numbers without claiming perfection. The design shows ten numbered squares, single and in pairs as hopscotch tradition demands, climbing in a column up the middle of the wall: each box a hand-drawn rectangle with its yellow figure in the centre, until at the top a small pink star marks the finish. At the foot of the column a rounded stone rests on a line, and two light footprints still seem to be hopping from one square to the next.

I like to think that every square holds the memory of a child's hand: the doubled lines where the chalk has passed twice, the figure corrected and gone over again, the dust settling along the edge like held breath. It is a design that needs no noise to be cheerful: the white of the chalk, the soft yellow of the numbers, the faded pink of the star, laid on the grey-blue of the blackboard without ever blurring into one another, are enough.
