The story
I sign the Cardellini Minuti wallpaper as a small act of everyday wonder, an invitation to stop at what, in nature, is noticed only if one looks calmly. It belongs to the great family of fauna, the realm of animal subjects that has always peopled the most refined walls with living, silent presences.
The design shows the European goldfinch, Carduelis carduelis, caught in profile as it stands still: it is recognised by its unmistakable red, white and black mask, by its buff body, by the single yellow wing bar cutting clean across the plumage and by the dark tail slightly fanned. Dozens of these small portraits, always of different size and orientation, dot the surface in a free order, spaced by wide breathing gaps, so that the eye discovers them one by one, as in a garden observed slowly.
The silhouettes are flat, the outlines clean, the fields even: a contemporary graphic language that makes the motif legible from a distance and surprising close up, where a few essential strokes draw the edge of the wing and the outline of the mask. Warm red, ivory, intense black and ochre gold make up a sober but vibrant palette, able to suit homes, offices and the most carefully considered hospitality interiors, wherever there is a free wall to tell of.
