The story
In Costole di Fiume wallpaper I live again the patience of water carving stone, layer after layer, until its most secret framework is revealed.
The design belongs to the style of river-carved sandstone, a surface built from sets of inclined laminae running at different angles, each truncated by the next in a classic cross-bedding discontinuity. Over time the river has eroded unevenly: the more cemented laminae stand out in fine ribs thrown towards the viewer, while the softer layers withdraw into shallow, chiselled grooves, creating a corrugated relief that advances diagonally and bends where the current changed direction.
The surface is continuous, seamless, dense with directed yet irregular bands, gathered here into bundles of ribs, spread elsewhere into wide inlets. The palette tells of the warmth of ochre and sand, fading into rust and burnt sienna along the more oxidised laminae, while bands of bone grey and taupe mark where the cementing has grown more fragile, and fine lines of iron oxidation trace the boundary of every layer. Close up, the grainy texture, the micro-terraces and the fine stratification reveal themselves only to those who come near.
