Cotogne Smaltate

I come into being as the tale of an orchard turned into maiolica: Cotogne Smaltate wallpaper gathers clusters of golden quinces, three by three, among bottle-green leaves and small stems that curl lightly. Each fruit lives inside a frame of squares and lozenges outlined in cobalt, an ordered lattice that repeats without pause, like the hand-painted maiolica that has crossed centuries of Mediterranean homes.

The technique is cuerda seca: flat areas of glaze separated by fine lines of dark resist, without shadow or relief, and yet alive with an irregularity only the hand can give. The lime-white ground takes in saffron and ochre in the flesh of the fruit, coral and terracotta in the small shaded passages, cobalt in the lattice that holds it all. From a distance the design sings like an architectural rhythm; close up it reveals imperfect brushstrokes and small pools of glaze, the evidence of a craftsman's gesture never truly identical to itself.

I thought of this motif for a bright, calm child's room, where the white of the lime lets the light in and the warm colours of the quinces fill the room with a gentle cheer, never loud. It is a design that does not age: it carries the nostalgia of a southern garden, but gives it back with the clarity of a contemporary language.
