Cresta di Deruta

I imagined Cresta di Deruta wallpaper as a song held within ceramic: cockerels in strict profile, tails opening in a sickle of long curved feathers, combs high and serrated like a crown of glazed terracotta. It is the maiolica style that guides every choice — that of hand-painted Italian ceramics, where deep blue and warm ochre settle on an ivory white ground, without shadow, without gradation, only full forms and clean outlines.

The birds are set sparse and far apart, facing in alternating directions: not a crowding but a silent dialogue, a wide space between one body and the next that lets the wall breathe. Fine linear hatching cuts the edges of the combs and the ribs of the tails, the only concession to detail in a composition otherwise flat, frontal, almost heraldic.
