The story
In Deriva d’Inchiostro wallpaper I find again the ancient gesture of one who lets colour fall on water and watches it drift: concentric rings, stretched until they become extreme horizontal ovals, follow one another like ripples held in a moment of stillness. It is the style of suminagashi marbling, the Japanese art of ink on water, rendered here in flat, crisp areas of colour, without gradation, as if the current had been stopped and laid out on the wall.
At the centre, slightly off axis, a dense knot of large interlaced rings gathers in the middle band, while towards the edges the forms thin into smaller, more distant circles, letting the ivory ground breathe. Deep indigo, slate grey, warm ochre and dusty terracotta alternate, with the occasional lighter band where two rings overlap: a chromatic balance that recalls the patience of marbling, where every pull is unrepeatable.
Close up, the strokes become as fine as threads, then widen into full bands; some of the ovals break off and re-emerge behind their neighbour, giving the sense of a current flowing beneath the surface. I like to think that whoever chooses Deriva d’Inchiostro wallpaper brings into the home the calm of an unrepeatable gesture, fixed for good.
