Falde di Conchiglia

I call this design Falde di Conchiglia wallpaper, and I do so thinking of the waves of a still sea, forever the same as itself. It belongs to the Clamshell motif, the shell-scale weave that decorative art has repeated for centuries, interpreted here in a contemporary key: wide flat arcs, far broader than they are tall, arranged in tightly overlapping rows that fall in a markedly shallow curve, from one edge of the field to the other. The edges touch, the rows nest without leaving any ground visible, and each scale is drawn with a fine outline that, in raking light, catches its profile. Three warm, closely related shades — bone, sand, terracotta — alternate in flat areas of colour, without gradation, composing a compact and silent surface.

I look at this weave and find in it the patient logic of nature building by accumulation: one scale after another, one wave after another, until an order emerges that seems simple only because it has been repeated often enough. It is the discreet beauty of deliberate repetition, which has no need to astonish because it reassures. In any room — a house, an office, a hotel lobby — this surface does not ask for attention: it offers it, to whoever stops to look closely.

In our workshop we choose each colour with care and check that the motif of this Falde di Conchiglia wallpaper runs on without a break from one panel to the next, so that the wall becomes a single gesture, coherent and made to measure for the space that receives it.
