Fascia di Sinopia

In my Fascia di Sinopia wallpaper I see again the gesture of those who, century after century, marked with earth the boundary between wall and floor. It is a mineral lime finish, a technique as old as village houses, which takes form here as a dado band drawn by hand in red-ochre pigment, running continuously along the base of a limewashed wall: the upper edge is a free, irregular line that falls and rises with the plasterer's wrist, while above it the field of pale lime breathes bare, for almost two thirds of the height, up to the top edge.

There is no symmetry here, but balance: the low, almost earthbound band, and the great luminous void above it, the only graphic event on an otherwise calm and sparse surface. I like to think of this wallpaper as a fragment of wall taken from a real house, with its hairline cracks, its trowel marks, the thickenings of pigment where the stroke hesitated or was taken up again, the lime crystals that catch the light.

It is a design that does not impose but accompanies: suited to any room, from a sitting room at home to a hotel lobby, wherever a large free wall asks to breathe in silence.
