Intarsio Astrale

I imagined the Intarsio Astrale wallpaper as a noble floor lifted upright, where stone stops being ground and becomes horizon. It belongs to the great tradition of polished bookmatched veined marble, the mirrored slab that reveals the natural drawing of the rock like a signature that cannot be repeated, here taken to a further level of compositional rigour.

The subject is an opus sectile inlay: large stone tesserae cut into lozenges, hexagons and triangular wedges, fitted together with no visible ground and with the finest of joints, like a continuous mosaic of solid marble. The composition forms a lattice of stars and hexagons which, at the centre, resolves into a single large rayed rose window — a medallion the eye reads from a distance, while the lattice continues dense to the margins. Nero Marquina, ochre Breccia, ivory Botticino, grey-veined Bardiglio and an accent of Giallo Siena alternate, with veins that change direction at every tessera, setting the geometry alight.

It is a design that speaks of order and of time: stone, quarried and cut to the millimetre, tells of a stability that reassures and dazzles at once.
