Fregio del Nilo

In the Fregio del Nilo wallpaper I tell of a rite as old as architecture itself: the column that holds up the sky becomes drawing, the flower that opens at dawn becomes sign. Each papyriform capital, flared like a bell of petals, alternates with a closed bud, in vertical columns that follow one another with the severe discipline of the temples on the great river. There is no shadow to distract the eye: only clean outlines, full areas of colour, a vector rigour that returns the pure geometry of Art Deco when it looked, with learned nostalgia, to the Egypt of the pharaohs.

The palette is warm and earthy — terracotta, faded turquoise, golden ochre — held in by outlines of a deep teal on an ivory ground that lets every band breathe. Fine incised ribs animate the capitals, while a light double outline draws each bud like a promise never quite released. The repeat runs from one edge to the other without interruption, so that the wall becomes a single unbroken frieze, a horizontal river of forms that mirror and repeat one another.

For the living room I imagine this pattern as a silent threshold: it accompanies the daylight without competing with it, and gives contemporary interiors a sense of ancient measure.
