Trama di Garofani

I like to think that the Trama di Garofani wallpaper comes from an old gesture: the hand that cut petals and leaves into a wooden block so they might repeat endlessly across a linen cloth. I took up that gesture and made it contemporary, stripping it of bright gold to dress it in clay, terracotta and olive, shades that answer one another without ever shouting.

The carnation, in the Italian textile tradition, was never just any flower: a symbol of promise and continuity, it returned in Ligurian brocades and in trousseaux as a silent good wish. Here I find it just opened, wrapped in stylised acanthus stems and volutes curling like thoughts chasing one another, in a dense, regular rhythm that knows no hierarchy: every petal has the same weight, every leaf the same breath.

It is a design made to last in the eye as much as in time: from a distance it composes a compact, reassuring weave, close up it opens into fine veining, into small deliberate imperfections that speak of the hand, not the machine. Every repeat holds a minimal variation, as happens in fabrics woven on a loom.
