Fulmine Giocoso

In the Fulmine Giocoso wallpaper I wanted to hold the instant in which light bursts and starts to play. From an off-centre point, as though from a small sun hidden in a corner of the room, the rays open out in a fan: clean, straight, of varying width, dense near the centre and gradually sparser towards the edges of the field. It is not a random motion: it is a disciplined celebration, the kind that belongs to constructivist geometry, where every line has a precise task.

Over this sheaf of rays I laid rigid bars, cut at decided angles, crossing the composition like the ribbons of a parlour game. Where bars and rays meet, small trapezoids appear, clean seams, thin fillets that only the most curious eye — a child lying on the floor, perhaps — will find close up. Matt red, black, warm ochre and off-white alternate in solid blocks, without gradation, with an accent of steel grey that gives breath and order to so much energy.

It is a design conceived for a child's room: cheerful, never childish in the trivial sense, able to fill the wall from edge to edge with a single continuous image, never repeated, which reads whole from a distance and gives small details close up.
