Gola dei Macachi

I come into being as Gola dei Macachi wallpaper, an ink evocation in the suibokuga tradition, the monochrome Zen painting that tells the world with few gestures and endless pauses. In the first third of my breadth the scene is already laid out: three macaques cling with long arms and curled tails to a knotted pine branch, arched diagonally above a steep gorge, while a fourth, younger one leans out towards the water falling below, foaming among the rocks.

The brush worked by contrasts: full calligraphic strokes for the wood and the spurs of rock, dry broken marks for the fur and the needles, wide graded washes for the mist, the spray and the rock face dissolving into the white of the paper. I keep that measured imbalance — the density gathering where the hands grip the bark, and thinning away to the void that breathes.

I recognise myself in this ancient gesture: the precarious balance of one who holds on and looks beyond at the same time, the tension between the firm grip and the abyss running below. It is an image of tamed vertigo, of silent courage handed down from generation to generation, just like the branch that carries all four. In the care with which WallZad renders every gleam of ink and every void of paper I find the same discipline as the suibokuga master: nothing is superfluous, everything is measure. Whoever sets me on a free wall takes in not an ornament, but an instant of suspended nature, ready to last.
