Gorgo d’Inchiostro

I like to think that the Gorgo d’Inchiostro wallpaper comes from a single gesture, that of a drop touching water and never stopping its spread. At the centre of the composition one whirl gathers all the energy of the design: tight, dense coils built from fine concentric bands, which gradually loosen and widen until they dissolve into long undulating lines. These waves bend, breathe, advance at a steady pace until they reach and fill every margin of the sheet, with no secondary motifs to distract the eye.

It is the language of Suminagashi, the old Japanese marbling on water, that suggests this compact, vibrant palette: night blue and anthracite at the heart of the whirl, fading into slate grey and dusty indigo, while the warm cream of the ground leaves room for a single accent of soft ochre, exactly where the coil screws in on itself. Close up every band is a clean, flat outline without shadow: the density itself tells the movement, from the compact centre to the airier edge.

In my idea of a room, this design asks for a single free wall, in natural light that crosses it without hurry: house, study or hotel, it hardly matters, because the whirl suits any contemporary, restrained space. It is the quiet of the repeated gesture that strikes, even before the colour. Making the Gorgo d’Inchiostro wallpaper at the scale and definition it deserves has been, for the WallZad atelier, an exercise in almost calligraphic patience.
