Groviglio d’Ombra

The Groviglio d’Ombra wallpaper comes from a single breath traced according to the grammar of Art Informel, the free gesture that does not describe but happens. At the centre of the field the lines tighten into a dark knot, thick with paint, where the passes overlap until they become matter; from that point the same lines widen into long calligraphic filaments, which thin and fray as they approach the margins, leaving wide voids of raw linen to breathe between one stroke and the next.

I worked the surface as a single body of marks: charcoal black and brown earth loading with thickness at the heart of the image, while along the finer branches the brushstroke opens out, letting the bristle show, the tearing of the pigment, a few splinters of rust red and ochre where the stroke turns back on itself. It is the visual translation of a principle everyone recognises without needing words: the tension that knots and the same tension released, the fixed point from which everything radiates.

In my idea of a wall, this design does not decorate: it inhabits the space as a single painting would, without repeats, legible from a distance in its radial force and rich, close up, in a minute, vibrant script.
