Impronta del Vasaio

I call this terracotta surface the Impronta del Vasaio wallpaper, because it still visibly carries the gesture of the hand that shaped it. It belongs to handmade terracotta left exposed: not a slab polished by industry, but Impruneta clay worked finger by finger, where the pressure and the slide of the hands have left parallel furrows, fingertip pads, small burrs of clay pushed up along the line of the mould. Here and there, shallow little craters record the moment the hand pressed and then let go.

The field is continuous, without frame or repeat, and the weave of marks slips diagonally towards the centre at a calm pace, never empty, never flat: sand and grog surface in the body, fine cracks radiate from the burrs, a fingerprint stays legible on the crest of a furrow. The colour is the true colour of the firing: burnt earth and brick red at the base, deep shadow in the furrows, ochre and pale terracotta where the light catches the ridges, with a few darker firing clouds to break the uniformity.
