Sciabolature d’Ambra

I sign the Sciabolature d’Ambra wallpaper starting from a gesture as old as wood itself: the cut. Here the larch is frame-sawn, its surface run through with close vertical lines that go straight from one edge to the other, every groove a clean channel dug into the fibre, every ridge a thread of light held between one cut and the next. It is the style of frame-sawn larch, where the blade does not decorate: it reveals. The grain runs parallel to the grooves, surfaces in long striations, and breaks off only briefly on bands of tight rings and knots that interrupt the rhythm without breaking it.

The colour tells of the light that passed through that blade: warm honey and amber turn to umber and sienna in the shadow of the channels, then lighten into pale straw and bone on the ridges touched by the sun, with rare grey-brown flashes where a knot darkens the fibre.
