Litania di Granito

In the Litania di Granito wallpaper I move along a processional corridor, a continuous colonnade that follows the enclosure wall of a temple, pillar after pillar, in a rhythm that knows no interruption.

The style is that of Dravidian architecture, born in southern India, where stone becomes discipline and devotion: every shaft is a squared monolith rising to a corbelled capital, carrying a deep architrave and a coffered ceiling, while the wall beside it holds bas-relief niches and continuous mouldings, incised beneath an eave that never breaks off.

The perspective is frontal, with a single vanishing point, and the bays follow one another until they are lost in a distant bay: almost nothing of sky or ground is left uncovered, only stone, shadow and measured light. The granite and the sandstone carry the marks of time — warm grey, ochre, rust-coloured lichen, charcoal shadows inside every opening, pale gleams on the abaci and the cornices. Close up you find the chisel marks on the faces of the shafts, the sharp edges of the capitals, the barely visible mortar joints, small votive niches cut at the base of the wall.

It is a walk before it is a design: an invitation to slow your step, to let repetition become meditation. This is why I wanted the Litania di Granito wallpaper to tell of stone as living matter, not as decoration.
