The story
I sign this Notturno delle Gazzelle wallpaper as a fragment of frieze carved into the night: gazelles in mid-leap, bodies stretched and backs arched, caught halfway through the stride on an emerald field, beneath an almost black ground.
The style is a nocturnal Art Deco, where every outline is closed and sure, like a silhouette cut from a sheet of lacquer. The gold line, thin and unbroken, draws muscles, hooves and lyre horns broken into geometric facets, catching the light like gold leaf on a lacquered panel. One large gazelle leaps in the foreground, the visual anchor of the composition, while others, smaller, climb diagonally towards the upper corner, letting the ground breathe between one leap and the next.
The colour is held to an essential register: emerald green, midnight black, warm gold and a touch of ivory reserved for the eyes and the tips of the hooves. Close up you find the parallel striations along the flanks, small golden dots and a crescent moon suspended in the field, a silent rhythm that does not compete with the leap.
For the room of a young man or a young woman I wanted an image able to hold a single large wall, legible from a distance and rich close up, without childishness but with the same energy one carries at twenty.
