Aquiloni di Gesso

I sign the Aquiloni di Gesso wallpaper the way one signs a childhood memory: with the light hand of someone who knows that the truest joy needs no ornament. I belong to the narrative gouache of the illustrated book, the kind that tells its story through closed shapes and decided colours, with no gradation to hide the hand that draws.

I was born of a simple gesture: a low, pale hill, its flank marked by dry brushstrokes and tufts of grass, from which a swarm of kites rises. Diamonds, boxes, long sinuous tails climb asymmetrically towards the sky, gathered on one side and scattered diagonally towards the other, letting the air breathe between them. Every shape is a cut-out of coloured paper with a fibrous edge, every string is drawn by an unsteady hand, every ribbon curves in a confident stroke of the brush. Chalk white and pale ochre for the ground, two or three blues laid down without mixing, and the bright colours — red, yellow, leaf green — giving voice to these little sailing ships of the wind.

I tell of a universal moment: the raised eyes, the short breath of the run uphill, the string pulling upwards. It is childhood playing with the wind and asking for nothing more. In a child's room, on the large free wall that every child deserves, this wallpaper becomes a daily horizon, light and never loud.
