The story
It comes about as an ancient frieze rediscovered and returned to contemporary light: the Palmette d’Ambra wallpaper tells of an ornamental band crossing the wall from end to end, symmetrical and solemn, where stylised lotus cups and fan palmettes alternate, linked by acanthus scrolls. Every shape is flat and clean, enclosed by a fine gold line that draws its outline without shadow or volume: a pure graphic mark, almost calligraphic, returning the austere elegance of old weavings and hand-worked waxes.
I like to think of this motif as a rhythmic breath: symmetry is not rigidity but balance, the recurrence of the palmettes is not monotony but song. From a distance the band asserts itself with its architectural scale, still legible in the bright air of a contemporary living room; close to you find the minute weave of the inner veining, the small lotus buds hidden along the stems, detail work that rewards a patient eye.
The palette stays earthy and composed — ink and slate, olive and bay, clay and terracotta, bronze and antique gold — laid over matt grounds in stone and charcoal, without the glint of real metal but with its discreet memory. It is an ornament that does not shout: it whispers grandeur while keeping its sobriety.
