Taglio di Cava

I am born of the oldest gesture in stoneworking: the Taglio di Cava wallpaper tells of the mark left by the diamond wire as it advances, slow and inexorable, through the block. I am lines, not images — parallel bands sliding diagonally across the whole surface, dense and tight on one side, then gradually wider and more open, as if the breathing of the quarry eased towards the opening of the light.

Each band is a field of flat colour, clean, without shading: clay, sand and lime alternate with travertine cream, grey-green plaster, mocha and espresso, while occasional bands of oxidised verdigris break the warmth of the stone with a metallic flash. From a distance the design is a single gesture, wide and confident; close up you find the fine weave of the sub-striations, the slender traces of the tool that cut the rock layer by layer.

There is no depth, there is no horizon: only the frontal plane of the matter, rendered with the precision of a screen print. And yet the hand instinctively looks for the relief the eye promises. This is the trompe-l'oeil materiality I love: stone evoked, not copied.
