Stecche del Tramonto

I am the Stecche del Tramonto wallpaper, and I am born of the memory of a half-closed venetian blind on a summer evening, when the light filtered in warm bands between the slats, wrapping the room in an old warmth.

My horizontal bands follow one another closely, each a different shade taken from the memory of the Seventies and Eighties: avocado, harvest gold, mustard, burnt orange, terracotta, chocolate, and then dusty teal, coral, plum. No colour is pure: every edge carries a slight doubling, a halftone weave recalling the off-register printing of the magazines of the time, when the ink ran an instant ahead of the plate. It is a deliberate flaw, a patina that keeps every slat alive, never flat.

I have neither centre nor margin: my bands run from one edge to the other and carry on beyond, so that, repeated across the wall, the weave knows no break. Close up I tell of the grain of period printing; from a distance I compose a clean, almost graphic rhythm that lights the half-light of a bedroom with its warm, discreet charge.
