Piume di Ostrina

The Piume di Ostrina wallpaper comes from an unexpected meeting: that between the geometry of the sea and the memory of the colour once called purple. It is a design that belongs to marine fauna, and I watch it as one watches a living organism surprised in its natural movement: the feathered arms of a crinoid open in a fan, each a jointed filament fringed on both sides with fine pinnules that give it the look of a living comb. The arms curve, overlap, some push towards the edges of the composition, others fold back towards a barely perceptible centre, leaving no empty space: a radial interlace that fills the whole wall.

The colour proceeds in clean bands, crimson red alternating with cream, and the same cadence repeats, at a smaller scale, along every pinnule: a rhythm read from a distance as pure chromatic energy, and close to breaking down into a thousand small articulations, into translucencies at the margins, into variations of red that run from brick to almost scarlet. Nothing in this alternation is mechanical: it is the same imperfection that makes a sea creature alive.
