Portale Vermiglio

I call this threshold the Portale Vermiglio wallpaper; it leads not to a room but to a thought: the idea that every passage, to be truly such, must be honoured. The design belongs to the Chinese Imperial style and shows a paifang, a ceremonial gateway of three bays, the central one taller and more solemn, the two side ones more contained, held up by tall turned wooden columns rising to stacked architraves, piled in decreasing rows up to a succession of small roofs with upturned eaves and ridge finials, one above the other across the full width.

Nothing in this architecture is left to rest the eye: every band is carved from edge to edge, gilded dougong brackets nest under each eave, lotus scrolls and cloud collars run along the beams, roundels with dragons and phoenixes animate the central architrave. The colour obeys an ancient hierarchy — columns and beams lacquered in a deep vermilion, gilding on the brackets, jade green under the eaves, glazed tiles in imperial yellow and dark blue-green, on hand-worked stone bases. It is a threshold that leads nowhere else but offers itself as a completion in itself, symmetrical, frontal, total.

In my daily work I look for exactly this: surfaces that do not merely decorate but declare an opening, a moment in which one is invited to stop before crossing.
