Rio Vermiglio

In my Rio Vermiglio wallpaper I tell of water dyed acid red, a mineral river opening like a luminous wound between banks of ochre and sulphur. It belongs to the genre of lakes and rivers, the great landscape tradition that has always looked to water as a threshold between earth and sky, and here it becomes a sinuous course that enters at one corner of the design and crosses the scene in a single wide bend before dissolving towards a sunlit, hazy horizon.

The banks rise in terraces, encrusted with sediment, streaked with iron oxides that speak of ages of slow, patient erosion. Near the water, small pools and rivulets catch the light, while salt crystallises in fine rims along the current, and the mineral crust splits and flakes like old parchment. Every detail, from the finest crack to the widest curve, is rendered with the sharpness of great landscape photography, in focus from the foreground to the horizon.

I wanted this Rio Vermiglio wallpaper to be not only an image but the memory of a primordial landscape, where colour becomes telluric force and time settles in visible layers. It is an invitation to stop, to let a single continuous scene take the whole wall without a break, as happens in rooms where the natural light changes but the material stays.
