Sottobosco di Ebano

I designed Sottobosco di Ebano wallpaper as one observes a forgotten patch of earth, bending close enough to touch it with the eye. It belongs to the Dark Botanical style, a genre that chooses a nocturnal ground so that every plant form can shine like a small event of light.

The design depicts woodland fungi — rounded bracket caps, slender stems topped with domed or flat caps, small fan-shaped polypores — rising among arching fern fronds and low tufts of moss, all rooted along a horizontal band of forest floor that runs the full width of the composition. Gills and pore surfaces are rendered in fine linear striations, the fern leaflets diminish towards their curling tips, and the moss thickens into small granular clumps. In the lower portion the vegetation grows denser in natural clusters that thin as they rise, until a few solitary stems fade into the dark ground.

The palette stays true to this intimacy: muted olive and sage greens against a soot-black ground, warmed by khaki and bone-grey tones on the mushroom caps. It is a timeless, minimal landscape, equally at home in a house, a studio or a hotel lobby, wherever a free wall remains to tell its story. In the care with which WallZad translates every striation and every clump of moss into digital print on non-woven paper, I find the same patience with which the forest builds, day after day, its small underground worlds.
