Squame di Creta

I drew the Squame di Creta wallpaper thinking of the old tiles that cover Mediterranean roofs, those rows of curved pantiles overlapping like scales, protecting without ever closing. Each arch grows out of the one before, in a sequence with no beginning and no end: it is the geometry of shelter, repeated endlessly, turned into ornament.

In the design the arches interlace densely, clay on sand, burnt earth on lime, with a fine thread of gold running now and then between one row and the next, like a precious stitch that does not shout but lights. From a distance the wall breathes in a calm, ordered rhythm; close up, every ink outline speaks of the hand that drew it, of the patience of the repeated gesture.

There is an old thought in this weave: that the soundest protection is never rigid, but flexible as a scale following the movement of the surface beneath it. The imbricated arches speak of thresholds, of passages, of houses that welcome without stopping time. It is a motif for those who look for order without coldness, warmth without excess.
