The story
The Varco d’Argilla wallpaper is born of architecture’s oldest gesture: the arch, a threshold that welcomes and repeats itself, multiplied here in a dense weave of semicircles overlapping like scales on one continuous surface. Each arch holds within it a fine drawing of concentric lines, a breath within the breath, which reveals its order only to those who come close.
I chose terracotta, clay and sand as the chromatic material of this rhythm, tempered by a thin stroke of ink and a discreet thread of gold that does not dazzle but leads the eye along the perimeter of each opening. It is a warm geometry, never clinical: the same measure that governs a Romanesque vault or a village portico, brought back to the domestic scale of the wall.
The opening is a symbol of passage, of continuity between one space and another, of a time that repeats without ever tiring the eye. In a study or an office it becomes the silent backdrop to a thought proceeding in order, without haste. Every arch is identical to the one before, and yet each seems new, like a thought returning in a different light.
