The story
The Squarcio Ambrato wallpaper is born of a single gesture: an ovoid form, compact and closed as an egg, occupies the centre of the field, its taut skin cut by three or four irregular gashes that open inward. I belong to the language of Spatialism, the movement that taught us to read the cut not as a wound but as a threshold: here the oxblood or graphite surface splits into flaps with clean margins, traced by a fine darker line, and lets a deep cavity show through where matt gold, bone white and pale ochre shine.
I do not describe a random break: every cut is a deliberate thrust, a blade opening the matter to show its luminous heart. One flank stays intact, taut, the memory of the original form; the other gives way, tears, reveals. This is the tension I bring to the wall — the same that lives in every whole surface threatened by its own interior, in everything closed that carries inside a light asking to come out.
From a distance the form imposes itself, monumental, suspended in a wide silent space; close up you find the fine cracks branching from the main cuts, the minute fragments of pigment scattered along the jagged edges, the tonal gradation that suggests a depth never quite disclosed.
