Squarcio Cadenzato

I am the Squarcio Cadenzato wallpaper, and I am born of a gesture that breaks the surface to reveal what lies behind it. I belong to the language of Gutai, the Japanese movement that made torn matter its alphabet: here a sequence of taut planes, like canvases or papers stretched over invisible frames, is set in a regular horizontal row, and each plane is gashed at the centre by a violent passage that opens its skin and shows the dark void beyond.

My design does not hide the effort of its making: the margins of every wound stay fibrous, ragged, and fine impact cracks radiate across the taut surface, while the rhythm — plane, tear, plane, tear — crosses the whole width without ever crowding. The colour stays raw and material: bone white and burnt earth rust for the planes, charcoal black in the openings, a single flare of vermilion red spread over one torn flap, the sole note of colour in an otherwise disciplined field.

To look at me from a distance is to read a cadence, a breathing at once mechanical and human; to come closer is to find the grain of the torn paper, the glint of the tension folds, the edge that frays where the gesture overcame the resistance of the matter. In the Squarcio Cadenzato wallpaper, at WallZad, I chose to respect that tension to the end, calibrating the print so that every tear keeps its tactile truth and every wall becomes the place where rupture turns to quiet.
