Terra Riarsa

It is born of a crack, my Terra Riarsa wallpaper: the one the sun draws when clay shrinks, slowly, under a raking light that chooses a single direction and imposes it on the whole surface. It is the memory of a natural gesture — not painted, not incised, but simply happened — rendered here in flat areas of clay, sand and lime, crossed by fine lines of mocha and espresso that trace the lattice of the cracks like a mineral writing.

There is no relief, there is no shadow: and yet the surface vibrates, thanks to a grey-green dust that surfaces here and there, suggesting the grain of the stone without ever telling it in full. It is a landscape without a horizon, an earth seen from very close, repeating without centre and without boundary, as if the whole room had been dried out by the same Mediterranean sun.

I like to think that whoever lives with this wallpaper lives in a place that crossed time before they did: an honest surface that pretends nothing, and that consoles for exactly that reason.
