Traliccio di Glicine

I call this design the Traliccio di Glicine wallpaper; it is born in the Flora family, the great plant story that has always fed the decorative imagination. Here Wisteria floribunda lets fall its long racemes of small five-petalled flowers, accompanied by pinnate leaves of oval leaflets, all woven through a trellis of canes drawn as a dense diagonal weave of regular crossings, with over-and-under bindings clearly readable. Among the meshes of the trellis open the full roses of the camellia, with their heart of stamens, and the five- to seven-lobed stars of Japanese maple leaves, dotted with fine radial veining. The whole composition runs in a cascading diagonal, from one corner of the wall to the other, without ever stumbling on the seam.

The ground is a warm ivory, the line an almost black blue that holds every outline, and a single coral-terracotta accent lights the camellias, while a muted sage animates the maple leaves. From a distance the design reads as one large botanical gesture; close up, the veining, the rhythmic dots at the heart of the flowers and the plaiting of the canes reward the lingering eye.
