Vortice di Sienna

I call this surface the Vortice di Sienna wallpaper, born of a painterly gesture never repeated, a single breath crossing the entire wall. At the heart of the composition a whirling core gathers, made of spiral arcs and gestural marks twisting on themselves, knotting into a compact mass of overlaid brushstrokes, almost carved from the very material of the colour.

It is Abstract Expressionism in its most authentic form, where the gesture precedes the thought and the wall becomes a field of battle and of quiet at once. From the centre, dense with deep umber, charcoal black and burnt sienna, the energy spreads outwards, crossing gleams of ochre and strips of cadmium red, until it dissolves into smoke greys, dusty ivory and traces of colour barely perceptible at the margins, where the marks grow rare and suspended like interrupted calligraphy.

Up close the surface tells its material story: cracks of dry pigment, rhythms of dragged bristle, small chromatic flickers trapped in the freest filaments, scraped areas where the ground surfaces. It is in this passage from chaos to emptiness that I recognise the deepest sense of the drawing: the force that spends itself, that settles, that leaves room for breath.
