The story
I sign the Abbraccio di Pietra wallpaper as an act of reverence towards the most solemn Baroque, the kind able to bend matter into curves that can welcome, almost guard, an entire space. Here the Baroque is not small-scale ornament but an architectural gesture: two long wings of columns open like arms and close again around a piazza, leaving two wide mouths open at the beginning and at the end of the composition.
Four concentric rows of monumental Doric columns draw the ellipse, dense and rhythmic at the sides, while at the centre everything becomes still: an obelisk rises on a stepped base, marking the exact axis of the piazza, and two lower fountains stand guard on either side of it, symmetrical, along the same line. The warm travertine — pale ivory, honey ochre, grey-brown shadows between one shaft and the next — reveals, close up, fluting, worn joints and mineral veining; an egg-and-dart cornice carries a balustrade peopled with small figures, and on the ground the paving radiates towards the obelisk like the rays of a stone sundial.
It is a design that speaks of a centre, of measure, of a space that lets itself be embraced without ever closing. In the Abbraccio di Pietra wallpaper I find the same discipline that WallZad brings to every interior: the choice of a single wall, left free to tell its story, where the great scale of the Baroque gesture and the fineness of the detail live together, coming closer or moving away with the gaze of whoever lives in the space.
