The story
In the Baluardo d’Arenaria wallpaper I find the silent voice of the stone that has guarded thresholds and kingdoms. Every time I look at this sandstone wall, made of massive squared blocks, I feel time marked out by the semicircular bastions that repeat like an architectural breath, crowned with stepped merlons and slender chhatri domes.
At the centre, the two-towered ceremonial gate rises like a settled thought: a solemn opening framed by a great recessed arch, a rectangular pishtaq incised with plant tracery, surmounted by a projecting cornice. The towers, pierced by fine jali windows, keep the light and let it filter through in geometric patterns, while the miniature domes crown their summits with a regal discretion.
The colour is that of the sandstone itself: warm ochre, rust red, sun-struck cream on the mouldings, ash grey in the shadow of the recesses. Close up, the joints between the blocks, the herringbone cuts of the merlons, the carved brackets beneath the domes and the thin traces of weathering speak of a time that is not afraid to show itself.
Frontal, symmetrical, monumental: this composition does not decorate the wall, it inhabits it.
