Andito Vittoriano

The Andito Vittoriano wallpaper is made for those who love entrances that tell a story before they are even crossed. I took my inspiration from Victorian encaustic mosaic, the glazed clay tile technique that for two centuries floored the halls and corridors of the great European houses, to give the wall the same geometric density and the same warm light as fired ceramic.

The design shows an entrance composition: two concentric frames enclose a central field. The outer band is a robust Greek key, a continuous interlace that turns at the corners with the precision of true inlay; the inner band is a finer chain of quatrefoils and lozenges. At the centre, small tesserae are set in a tight grid of triangles, squares and interlocking crosses, forming a single continuous surface, like a real floor set into the threshold of the house.

Deep terracotta, ochre, cream and notes of chocolate black and olive make up a clay palette, never cold, never artificial: it is the same earth that shaped the original tiles, with its firing variations and the thin shadows of the joints between one tessera and the next.
