The story
I drew the Bussola di Maiolica wallpaper the way an old floor is composed, petal after petal, until the surface is filled without a single empty space. Each rosette is born of two twin petals, with sharp points converging on a small ringed pivot: a minute motif, repeated in a close mesh where the points almost touch, drawing a compact, hypnotic weave from one edge of the wall to the other.
The palette belongs to the maiolica tradition: deep cobalt and warm ochre stand out on an ivory white ground, while a thin cobalt ring frames every pivot. Down the centre of each petal runs a fine vein, a detail found only by looking closely, like the brushstrokes of a craftsman who leaves nothing to chance.
It is neither a centred ornament nor a scene to be admired from afar: it is a continuous fabric, made to wrap a whole wall and give it back its breath, in a house, a studio or a hotel lobby, wherever natural light can cross it unhindered. Its rigorous geometry recalls the ancient order of Mediterranean ceramics, but its density is thoroughly contemporary: a design to be looked at twice, once from a distance for the whole, once close up for the detail.
