Baldacchino di Terracotta

I sign the Baldacchino di Terracotta wallpaper as a tale suspended between two rhythms: the slow pace of country courts and the equally slow growth of a leaf until it becomes architecture. I belong to maximalism, the style that never fears fullness and here finds its most cultivated measure: no space is left bare, every inch tells a story.

In the lower and mid register move courtly couples, shepherds, travellers and dancers in period dress, gathered into small scenes — conversation, courtship, hunting, pastoral labour — engraved with the fineness of copperplate and modelled by the crosshatching that shapes drapery, faces, gesture. Above them, like a vegetal canopy, oversized acanthus leaves arch, together with garlands and full-blown blossoms cascading down to frame and partly overlap the figures below, sculptural masses of veined petals and serrated leaves.

The deep rust ground holds the shadows and folds, while the figures and flowers emerge in cream, in a two-tone contrast that is at once narrative and technical drawing. I have invented nothing that the classic toile-de-Jouy engraving did not already contain: I have simply let that tradition expand until it filled the entire wall.
