The story
The Balzo Glaciale wallpaper is born of a suspended instant: a ski jumper, his body arched forward, his arms stretched back, the two skis parallel, motionless at the highest point of the flight. The language is that of Italian Second Futurism, which here breaks figure and landscape into angular planes, clean outlines and flat colour, with no gradation, in order to render speed as structure and not as blur.
Below and behind the athlete, the slope shatters into triangular crests and lozenges of ice, from whose edges short speed lines radiate and thin out towards the margins of the design, letting the sheet breathe. Glacial white dominates, crossed by two cold blues and by a single warm accent, the vermilion of the suit, while the black of the outlines keeps every plane separate from the others, like the tesserae of a mosaic in motion.
Close up, the drawing reveals a dense weave of small marks: parallel hatching inside the large white fields to suggest compacted snow, tiny triangular notches along the edges of the skis and the shell of the helmet, speed lines built from small separate dashes. It is a gesture that speaks of the silent courage of the one who launches himself, and at the same time of the calm of a moment stopped for ever, the Balzo Glaciale wallpaper as an emblem of a composed impetus.
