The story
The Bisbiglio d’Avorio wallpaper comes from a minimal, absolute gesture: a square plane whose four sides are turned a few degrees from the horizontal and the vertical, so that its corners point just off the cardinal points. It belongs to the language of Suprematism, the movement that stripped form of all narrative so that it alone could carry meaning. Here the square does not detach from the ground by contrast of colour: warm ivory against bone white, barely cooler, the two tones born of the same chromatic base and separated only by a breath of value. From a distance the surface looks almost empty, an unobstructed breath; close up the outline reveals a human line, slightly wavering, a thin halo where the two whites meet, and brush passes running in a single direction, quiet as a promise.
I wanted this balance to stay intact, without giving in to the temptation to fill: what is essential in this design is what goes unsaid. It is a form suspended between being there and dissolving, able to pass without jarring through a silent house, a quiet office, the discreet lobby of a hotel that has no need to announce its elegance.
In the WallZad workshop every variation of this white on white is calibrated by hand before printing, so that the Bisbiglio d’Avorio wallpaper keeps, on every large free wall, the same subtle vibration it was born with: a barely tilted square, and all the space that holds it.
