Brezza di Lino

I draw the Brezza di Lino wallpaper the way one watches a field barely crossed by the wind, which never quite stops. It belongs to the Flora family, the subjects that tell of nature in its smallest and least showy form: here the flowers of Linum usitatissimum, the fibre flax, appear with their five rounded petals, fine veins radiating from the centre and small dot-like stamens, carried on slender stems among linear leaves set alternately.

It is neither a centred composition nor a scene to be looked at frontally: flowers and leaves float at different angles on a warm ivory ground, sparse, with breathing space between one cycle and the next, as though the design had been caught in a moment of stillness before the wind returned to move it. The soft blue-violet of the petals, the sage green of the stems, the ivory of the centres: a measured palette that seeks not effect but endurance.

In this I recognise myself: in the choice to let nature stay light, almost suspended, instead of imposing itself.
