Compressione Ottica

I drew the Compressione Ottica wallpaper as an exercise in rigour and vertigo at once. It is a chequerboard that starts out regular at the centre, with wide, clean square modules, and gradually compresses towards the four margins until it becomes a thin filigree of black and ivory strips. It belongs to the great season of Op Art, the language that turns flat geometry into an illusion of movement, without recourse to a single degree of perspective or a single shadow.

There is no breathing background, no resting margin: warm white and deep black alternate all the way to the edges, in a constant tension that deceives the eye into perceiving a curvature where there is only an absolute surface. It is the discipline of the clean cut, without shading, that generates the vertigo: every line of compression is calculated, every module aligned to the millimetre in a motif that repeats without interruption.

In this severe game I find something deeply human: the search for an order that bends, tightens and resists deformation while keeping its logic intact. It is the same care WallZad gives to each of its surfaces, where precise drawing meets Italian craft knowledge. Applied to a large free wall, the Compressione Ottica wallpaper becomes the silent fulcrum of any room, able to speak with the natural light of a house, a studio or a hotel lobby, asking nothing more than an attentive eye.
