Fronte Palladiano

In the Fronte Palladiano wallpaper I wanted to fix the instant in which architecture becomes a promise of order. At the centre of the composition stands a temple block, the triangular pediment carried by a row of fluted Ionic columns that form a deep portico; on either side, symmetrical, stretch low arcaded wings, the round-headed arches repeating at a regular step to the edges of the design.

It is the language of Palladianism, translated here into material: rusticated masonry at the base, blocks of smooth ashlar higher up, a continuous cornice that binds the whole façade into a single horizontal breath. The palette stays mineral and warm — cream and travertine for columns and mouldings, ochre and warm grey for the rendered surfaces, worn terracotta on the roofs, washed-out green on the shutters. Coming closer, you find the finishes that give the stone its life: the clean fluting of the shafts, the dentils below the pediment, the radiating voussoirs of the arches, the balustrade on the cornice, the raking shadows that draw every joint.

There is, in this measured symmetry, a lesson in quiet: the certainty that proportion can contain every upward drive without ever losing it.
