Cripta di Pietraforte

I sign Cripta di Pietraforte wallpaper as one signs a place found again: a stone corridor that opens before the viewer and never ends, because its single image fills the wall from one edge to the other, seamlessly.

The design belongs to the Romanesque language, and declares it in every part: low, squat columns, their cushion capitals swollen and four-lobed, wider than the shafts they stand on, follow one another in a tight grid; from them rise low groin vaults, diagonal ribs meeting in square bosses, bay after bay, up to a back wall barely perceptible. It is the hall of a crypt seen along its central nave, a compact lattice of arches that repeats with no gaps, dense as a weave woven into the stone.

The matter tells of time: blond limestone and warm grey in the columns, ochre and raw sienna in the webs of the vaults, brown-black shadows in the joints and in the springings of the arches. Close up you find the chisel marks on the capitals, the slightly irregular coursing of the ashlars, the foot of every column rounded by the centuries: details that only patient observation gives back, and that in Cripta di Pietraforte wallpaper return intact, as they would have been read by someone walking slowly along that nave.
