Timpano Dorico

I imagined the Timpano Dorico wallpaper as the meeting of stone and wall, the front of a temple offered whole to the eye. Eight fluted columns, in warm limestone between cream and honey, carry the entire entablature — plain architrave, frieze of triglyphs and metopes, and the low triangular pediment with acroteria at the corners — while three crepidoma steps run from one edge to the other, unbroken, founding the composition.

It is classical Greek architecture, in its most austere Doric measure, that I wanted to give back: absolute symmetry, the central axis, the regular rhythm of the columns filling the middle band of the image like a musical sequence carved in stone. The light, even and natural, falls into every flute, draws fine grey shadows, grazes the ochre patina worn by time on the cornices and the triglyphs, and settles on the mineral cracks of the steps, where every cut tells a story.

In this temple front I recognise an idea of order that precedes every age: the certainty of measure, the dignity born of rigour.
